“??????? ?? ? ???? ???? ??? ???? ??? ???????????, ?????? ???? ???? ??? ????? ?? ??? ?????.” – ????? ?????, 1514

Titled ??? ??? ????? ??????? ?? ?? ????, this third webinar in our series ‘Melaka: A Post for the 21st Century’ looks at the significance of Melaka as a trading port. This webinar will also look at how things bought and sold have and will continually be integrated into identity, culture, and lifestyle.

Look forward to receiving new insights into how the idea of “shopping” and trade and commerce presently co-exist in this vibrant modern Entrepôt – as well as the evolving food scene – and how this has influenced other port cities in the region.

Join our speakers from Melaka and Singapore as we look into the evolution of Malacca from a historical port city to the much-loved bazaar of shopping and food we’ve come to enjoy today! ✨⁣⁣

This is a programme of Prime 53, organised by The Medici Watermark, and curated by Global Cultural Alliance.⁣

Born in France, and married to a Malaccan, trained geographer and historian Serge Jardin calls himself a memory smuggler. For more than 30 years, he has worked as a tour leader, tourist guide, travel agent, and hotelier in Malaysia – all of which have made him fall more in love with Malaysia. Currently, he is living in old Melaka.

With French contribution to Malaysia and Melaka history as his two principal centres of interest, he has penned a few books. The first was “Rêver Malacca”, which was based on the writings of the travellers. Proceeding this, he penned “Malaisie, un certain regard” with Sylvie Gradeler which looked at another angle of arts, crafts, and literature in Malaysia. Moreover, he penned “Malacca Style” with photographer, Tham Ze Hoe.

Aside from the aforementioned, he published (photography by H. Tan and text by J. Bouchaud). In his latest publication, “Diary of a French Missionary”, he expounded on Penang during the Japanese Occupation.

He is currently working on “A Fortuitous Encounter”, “Walks in the French Memory of Malaysia”, and on the translation of the “Account of a VOC Mercenary in Melaka”.
